Granada is spanish for the word Pomegranate, and a really common fruit in South East Asia. The name pomegranate derives from Latin pomum (apple) and granatus (seeded). It is an apt description for the fruit which is laden with a rich juicy mass of sweet red pulp and its many seeds.

The pomegranate is widely featured in European myths, notably in the story of Persephone, the Aegean Triple Goddess who evolved into the Olympian Hera, Side. The pomegranate fruit was an emblem in the coat of arms of Catherine of Aragon (1485 - 1536). She was the widow of Arthur, Prince of Wales but, more memorably, was King Henry VIIIs first wife. However, when Queen Catherine didnt produce a male heir, His Majesty cast a furtive glance around the court for younger and more promising breeding stock, finally settling on Anne Boleyn. With a new queen ensconced in the Palace, her first decree was a new coat of arms, showing a white falcon pecking at a pomegranate.

The rich reds (these are NOT rubies as they fall outside of the narrow colour band range that is assigned to conundrums that can be identified as rubies - and also that the colour is obtained through heat and beryllium) and pale earthly yellows of these sapphires are reminiscent of the pomegranate fruit. These dangle from a handcrafted vine decorated frame and are suspended from sterling silver ear wires.
